SUMMARY:Monthly Visualisers Gathering
LOCATION:c-base Raumstation\, Rungestrasse 20\, (2nd backyard)\, Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Hello visionaries!\n\nIt's Lightning Talks time again! We very much liked your last lightning talks\, so we're happy to host presentations again.\n\n------------------------------------\n\nThe event will be opened by a live coding session about processing and visualising big data\, held by Romeo Kienzler. Romeo is a data scientist working for the IBM Cloud Transformation Lab in Zurich\, who will be in Berlin for a short time. He is offering us his answers about a question asked often by our members: how to run visualisations on data so big that it crashes your usual tools! Romeo has a broad skill set when it comes to visualising big data\, so take the chance to ask about your daily big challenges! Here is a more specific description:\n\nRomeo Kienzler (@RomeoKienzler (https://twitter.com/RomeoKienzler)) will implement an ETL process in NodeRED/Node.js capturing Tweets and storing them into multiple files in HDFS. Using BigSQL - a ANSI compliant SQL layer some insights on these tweets are generated and returned to a JQuery client via a REST API implemented in Scala and running on top of the PlayFramework. This end-to-end application will show how easy it is to draw visualisations on real-time BigData streams. If there will be time Romeo could also present other visualisation solutions currently adopted at IBM\n\n------------------------------------\n\nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/3/a/a/600_438997802.jpeg\n\nAfterwards\, Alsino Skowronnek (@Alsinosko (https://twitter.com/Alsinosko)) will give a Lightning Talk about "AIRBNB vs. BERLIN – What data tells us"\n\nRents are on the rise in Berlin\, and the reasons are manifold. Online portals of the so-called “sharing economy”\, such as Airbnb\, are marketing to tourists and have proven to be a profitable business. But are they contributing to a shortage in affordable housing by replacing regular rental appartments with shord term holiday flats? This question has sparked a vivid public debate not only in New York\, San Francisco and London\, but also in Berlin. Alsino Skowronnek\, Jonas Parnow and Lucas Vogel\, have looked into Airbnb’s business activity in Berlin.Their website www.airbnbvsberlin.com (http://www.airbnbvsberlin.com/) offers a concise analysis of all publicly available Airbnb data for Berlin to date. The findings are presented as an engaging storyline\, including interactive maps and visualisations.\n\n------------------------------------\n\nAnd then\, Oussama Mubarak (@semiaddict (https://twitter.com/semiaddict)) will talk 10min about his research project "Visual identification in multi-user co-located interaction":\n\n"Conducted at EnsadLab and Cnam in Paris as part of the CoSiMa (Collaborative Situated Media) ANR project that aims at creating a platform for co-located collective interaction\, my thesis attempts to understand and find solutions to the difficulties encountered in such interactions\, especially in regards to the visual identification and tracking of one's own actions on shared interfaces.\n\nI will present the current state of my research starting with the history of the research project and explaining the problematic through examples of existing projects before concluding with a few considered solutions."\n\n------------------------------------\n\nIf you want to present something at the next MeetUp in July\, send an email to Lisa: lisacharlotterost@gmail.com\, or use the contact page (http://www.meetup.com/messages/?new_convo=true). You're very welcome to talk 10 minutes or less about...\n\n• A visualisation project you're currently working on and for that you need some feedback\, or requests for help for your own project\n\n• A project you've just finished and what you learned while working on it\n\n• Work done by others or technologies you want to introduce to others\n\n• Something else that other people might find interesting.\n\nWe're looking forward to see you there!
